I have been writing about business opportunities or business startups you can do with or without capital, especially in farming-related areas.
Today, I want to address an area that requires some millions to start and that is monogramming. This business is good for retirees who have already got the network. Young ones with good marketing strength will also prosper here.
Major Equipment
Mr. Alaketu, the retiree of the United Bank (UB) as a manger after working in nearly all the bank’s departments for almost 20 years, said as he went into general printing and monogramming business that monogramming is nothing but digital embroidery. It is expensive to establish.
It is one business where you can start small with an investment of almost three million naira, buying the least machine in the business. The major equipment in monogramming is computerized embroidery and monogramming machines.
You do not need a big office to start operations. Though I have a big office, DIGITAL Business Service Ltd at Agidingbi, Ikeja (near Femi Kuti Shrine), my advice for young ones with good marketing strength is that monogramming has a lot of opportunities in it. They can start from a shop, from a room at home, from garage; after all “great things start small”, says MTN.
Knowledge
If you are able to buy the machine, the supplier of the machine (for instance, Dalewares Machines) will give you the mandatory training free. Having knowledge of what you are doing is necessary for success. Once the machine is acquired, you can operate from any little space with just two persons, one operating and the other packaging.
Cost
According to Mr.Alaketu, the smallest machine in monogramming with one head that has six to nine needles cost N 2.8m. The biggest machine in monogramming is already here; it costs tens of millions and has 30 heads. The one with 15 heads cost about N16m. And as mentioned earlier, a shop, garage, room at home is just enough space for young starters.
Marketing
This is the major area that makes or mars business. It is not good to go into monogramming, acquiring the equipment and yet no network or plain ‘connection’ as many Nigerians call it. “The distribution trend in this business is that many people in the monogramming business are mere contractors.
Some have the knowledge, we are not against this set, but many are just middlemen who get the jobs and distribute them to the professionals. But after looking at all other areas, I have seen that this kind of atmosphere exists in all sectors, even in oil and gas. The tools needed here are nothing but ‘connection’.
Prospects
The business volume is large. Monogramming had to do with logo creation, branding of T-shirts, caps, umbrella, badges, folders, handkerchiefs, towels, jerseys pens, phones, ties, award plaques, key rings and many other gift items for big corporate organizations, like MTN, Airtel, UAC, Glo, etc.
Think of all the other prospects like banks, insurance companies, schools, social and political groupings. “My only regret is that contractors are depriving many professionals from getting a good share of the work.
